First, though, I need to tell you what system I came from and what I'm upgrading from.

A long, long time ago, in a rent house in Dallas, I purchased an HP Pavilion desktop, for home computing and to edit and manage the Twisted Gamer Radio podcast that I was starting. It didn't need to be fast, I just needed it to do one thing, and occasionally browse the internet. I'm using this PC right now in my office, to surf the web, check Facebook, etc. and write this post. It's not a workhorse, and occasionally has hiccups, but for the most part has been rock solid. It stays on 24/7 and is my go to for general stuff.

Here's the specs of my current setup:
- 2.60Ghz AMD Athlon II X4 620 Processor - 2,938 PassMark CPU Rating (I'll talk about this number later)
- 8GB RAM 667Mhz Memory
- Windows 10 64-bit (It came with Windows 7, and I did the free upgrade to Win10)

Hard Drives:
- 640GB Western Digital Blue (original unit)
- 2TB Western Digital Black
- 2TB Western Digital Black
- 5TB Seagate Backup External USB Drive
- 5TB Seagate Backup+ External USB Drive

A few years after getting this PC and using it to edit the podcast, I also began to store our high-def home movies, family pictures, and my music collection that I had ripped from CD's.

The PC has been fine for a few years, doing it's thing, but recently we have had streaming issues in the house when watching movies. Lots of buffering, lag, and stops and starts when view movies. This is where the PassMark score I mentioned comes in.

Depending on how you store your media, Plex might need to transcode the video to a format that is viewable for the device you are watching it on. Tablets, phones, etc. all need the Plex server to transcode the video files into a format that the phone and tablet can view. If you do a lot of this, you need a pretty beefy CPU/GPU. The standard is 2,000 PassMark score per 1080p transcoded stream.

If you'll remember, my PC up above is almost at 3,000. So that's essentially one stream and nothing else. But, with browsers being open, e-mail clients, and other tasks running on the PC, that number comes down and occasionally it can't handle the one stream. Very frustrating, but it's a really old PC.

Time to build a new one.

I had started looking into just buying another desktop and going from there, or building a tower PC with a lot of drive bays that I could put a beefy CPU in to get what I wanted. Easy peasy right? Well, I started to slowly learn that you can buy enterprise grade hardware for super cheap on eBay. I used to work in a data-center, and worked with blade and rack mounted servers. Once those servers are decommissioned from use, they can be re-purposed and sold on the used market for super cheap. Think of them like a car. It's super expensive in the car lot, but as soon as you drive it off there, the price goes down dramatically.

I found a Reddit group that was all about Plex, and began to see people were posting their server builds and what they had used. If you wanted to, you can put in over $2K into your own Plex server. Uh, no way. My wife would slaughter me and cut my head off with a RAM stick. I eventually saw a build that was much more budget friendly, and included a lot of hard drive bays and was cheaper than buying PC off the shelf.

If you want to see the full parts list click on this link: https://www.reddit.com/r/JDM_WAAAT/comments/8udj3e/plex_server_build_recommendation_entrylevel_375/

I mostly followed the build, but upgraded the processors for a little bit more money, and had to get a different motherboard because the one listed was super expensive.

Here's the specs of my current build:

- Rosewill RSV-L4500 4U Rackmount Server with 15 drive bays and 8 Fans
- EVGA 850 Watt Power Supply

- 3 x Arctic 120mm Case Fans (fan wall) - I removed the stock fans the case comes with at the front of the hard drive enclosures. I've seen videos of them on and they create a negative pressure being right up against the metal grate and are way loud.
- 2 x Arctic 80mm Case Fans (rear fans)
- SuperMicro X8DTE Dual Socket 1366 E-ATX Motherboard
- 2 x SuperMicro SNK-P0038P Heatsinks
- Arctic MX-4 Thermal Compound Paste
- 2 x 2.93GHz Intel X5670 6-Core Processors - 7,931 per CPU x 2 = 15,862 PassMark CPU Rating
- 24GB RAM DDR3 ECC REG
- LSI 6Gbps SAS 9201-8i Card in IT Mode
- 2 x Mini SAS to 4 SATA breakout cable (gives me 8 drives per card - motherboard has 6 onboard SATA)
- 16GB Kingston DataTraveler USB

Server OS:
- UNRAID - Headless Linux based OS run off of the USB stick

Storage:
- ICY Dock 2.5" SSD / SATA 3.5" drive bay converter - Will be used to correctly mount the SSD in one of the drive bays
- 500GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD - Will be used as a cache drive and to store the Plex Media Server database and album artwork, etc. for faster loading

The Arctic rear fans here are installed. Now installing the RAM and motherboard. Using three slots per CPU allows me to open up all three RAM channels. Don't mind the Paw Patrol place mat. We're building on our kitchen table.
Starting to figure out the cable/wire management for the power supply. This is something I take pride in. I also used to be a network cabling technician, so zipties are my friend and also fun to chew on while you work.
Another shot of the cable management. The pins for the front power/reset/USB was a pain in the ass to figure out. I had to search online for the diagram and figure out what was needed to match the case capabilities to the motherboard capabilities. Got it tested and everything works!
All buttoned up. This is the core build. I don't have the SAS card in at the moment, but once I start adding hard drives I'll need to connect the SAS breakout cables and run power to the drives from the power supply. I might make another post about that later.
For drives, I'm going to wait and see what happens on Black Friday this year, and see if I can find a good deal on Western Digital Red 4TB drives. They usually have those on sale at Frys or Best Buy, so I'll also see if I can find a "shuckable" hard drive (a drive inside an external drive enclosure that can be removed and used without the drive enclosure). I've done a little calculation on my current setup and probably need 4 4TB drives. This will give me 3 storage drives and one parity drive, with the ability to expand later.

The way Unraid works is it allows you to expand the drive array on the fly as you go. You don't need to build the full array from the start. It allows you to change/update the array as you need to expand your storage needs. Very cool. You can use it with or without a parity drive (which can be expanded to dual parity drives), a cache drive (to make writes to the array faster).

During this process Clementine was helping me with the fans and getting everything laid out on the table to put in. I was cleaning the old thermal past off the heatsinks and putting them on the table to be put in, and I guess she nicked her finger on one of the fins.

She didn't realize she had done it and began to play and spin the rear case fans. Now, the Arctic fans are white plastic blades, so when she did so she left a little DNA on there. She literally put her sweat and blood into that case. I haven't seen any droplets of blood anywhere else, and after we put a My Little Pony bandaid on it she was ready to go back to work.

That's all I got for now. Will try and provide updates once I get more parts in (mainly the drives).

you know that I'll be a first-time dad by the middle part of June of
this year. My wife and I are having a baby girl, and we have
decided to name her Clementine. I'm not going to sit here and type that we named her after Telltale's video game Walking Dead
character, but I will say that by playing through all 5 episodes of
the game, hearing it over and over throughout the course of 10+
hours, and seeing a helpless little 7 year old girl deal with the
un-dead, it did rub off on us. It really is a sweet little girl name. Read from that what you will. I also
am obligated to say "I love you" to my wife after that, because my
wife is totally on board with that name. Not only is she on board,
she loves it and thinks it's sweet. There is no word yet on the
middle name just yet, but we're working out the details on a short
and sweet middle name. Any ideas? Send them my way.

My name is Justin and my wife's name is Jennifer. Two of the most
common 1980's names there are. Some people want us to do a "J"
name. Other people are glad we DIDN'T do a "J" name. Some people
we tell aren't on board with Clementine (or Clem, or Clemmy). And
to all of those people I say: 1) She is my daughter. 2) She is
Jen's daughter. 3) She will know how to use her biting words and will
sling phrases around with the best of them on the playground. I
fully expect her to grow up to be a stand-up comedian. And although
stand-up comedians do sometimes get picked on (it fuels their
material), they do eventually grow up and have their own HBO
specials and make millions of dollars.

Despite all of the excitement, fear, and anticipation that goes
along with bringing a kid into this world, I still want to talk
about those vidya games. Sure sure, call me crazy and tell me I have
other more important things to worry about, but I still feel like I
have something to say about them; to review them, to discuss the
broad range of topics they cover, and to read up on all of the
insight that goes into making those fun games along the way. I
don't have as much time as I used to, but I will be on here from
time to time spilling the beans and getting as much of this stuff out as I can.
It all won't be logical. Hell, it might not even make sense. But
I'll try, and it will help me scratch this interactive media itch I have. So
please indulge me. Plus, you'll occasionally get updates on Clem's
status, so there's something to look forward to if you're into the whole baby thing.

Back to video games for the moment -

It feels like it was only yesterday when I shut down the mics (not
permanently) on the podcast I co-created with my friend Dalyn called
Twisted Gamer Radio. Sadly, when I actually look back it was over a
year now.

So much has happened in that year. What happened? I have no idea,
but that's how life is, isn't it? We try to look back and grasp our
memories or accomplishments, only to have them slowly slip through our
fingers (thank you Princess Leia for help on that quote). I'm not done with the whole
podcasting thing. I haven't sold off all of my gear. I haven't
quit paying Amazon to host all of my .mp3 files. You can still
access the RSS feed and download the episodes that are there. All
13 of them. But I need somewhere to vent. Somewhere to release
these words and tire me out, so I feel like I don't have anything
left on this topic anymore. Even with a kid and being eventually
sleep-deprived, I feel like I will still be interested in and
wanting more video game news from the internet.

This brings me to my current state.

With Bioshock: Infinite coming out tomorrow, I set in motion a plan
to get the game for "free".

I normally buy video games months, if not years after they're
released (unless they are a highly anticipated title). Games in the
Mass Effect, Bioshock, Borderlands or any other game that piques my
interest will be picked up on day one. I will find a way to get
those. Others, I mostly wait on them because by the time I'm ready
to play them, they're cheaper, but also because I'm too busy playing
another past game in my backlog that I need to experience. I almost
said "get rid of", and that's wrong. I don't mean it that way. In
the coming months, I probably won't have any time to game at all, so
getting rid of as much backlog games as I can will ease me into
parenthood and more importantly the next console generation. Wait,
reverse that.

If you can't read in-between the lines, that pretty
much means I'll be slaving away on previous generation games for
about a year before I make the move (and have enough money socked
away in diapers) to buy a new Xbox or PS4 console.

I've been on a tear recently, having picked out and completed over
10 games to trade-in for Bioshock: Infinite. Most of the games are
ones I've held onto, but realized I'm probably never going to play
them. Something inside me snapped, and that set in motion a massive
picking of games out of my backlog cabinet.

Some of the games I
picked have been out so long they have sequels out already, but I
kept them to experience the story and see the progression from the
first game in the series to the second, or second to third, etc.
I've always said that I need to pick away at my backlog (even
writing a post on Loot Ninja a long ass time ago about it and my
problem), but I never stuck to that code of "beat a backlog game,
purchase a new game" mentality. This brings me around to my current plan.

I want to go back into my video game backlog and beat games that I
started but never finished, or beat games from years ago to help get
me the ultimate prize of the perfect game: Bioshock: Infinite*
(based on current review scores of all major blogs and Metacritic
rating.)

Currently I'm making my way through Gears of War 1 with a friend
(who needs the co-op achievement), and on the PS3 side of things I
started the Killzone 3 single-player. After that? I've got to finish a
date I started back in March of 2012 with Nathan Drake and Uncharted
3: Drake's Deception. Then it's on to the other 24 disc-based games
I have in my catalog both on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Thank god that
this summer is upon us and the slow crawl to October is on, so I can
do some catching up game-wise.

As for the blog, I plan on keeping you updated on my progress and I
also plan on reviewing and sharing my thoughts on smaller, indie
titles on all platforms that deserve the exposure (how little of it
they do get from my blog). This will give me the opportunity to
still hack and slash away at my backlog, but keep you guys informed
on all things indie games as they get picked up on my radar. I'd
love to say that I will promise to keep you guys updated on all of
this, but you never know just what will happen. I will try though,
so there's that.

What about you readers? Have you put a game so far back in your
backlog, that it took you weeks, months or years to come back to it?Justin McCulloughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09861298462065449078noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8702164271082266354.post-54930494995225195752012-09-13T17:46:00.002-05:002012-09-13T17:46:17.200-05:00TGR Episode 13 - Ramblings, Fun Times, and Hot Coffee

We're only a few weeks away from the second Gearbox Community Day on Sept. 15th, and what better way to get pumped up and excited for the panels and the Borderlands 2 launch party extravaganza than to go back and listen to last year's Borderlands panel. If you missed out on all of the previous panels from that day, you can click these links to go back and listen (Aliens: Colonial Marines, Borderlands, Brothers In Arms: Furious 4, and Duke Nukem Forever) but for now enjoy the long, gazillion gun-filled panel for Borderlands.

Now there is no rhyme or reason to which order they'll go up in, so you better check back in with the podcast feed to get updated. I have a feeling that the game that's getting the sequel and launch party will go up last.

So sit back, relax, and take in all the loot chest filled goodness of the Borderlands panel.

We're about a month out from the second Gearbox Community Day on Sept. 15th, and what better way to get pumped up and excited for the panels and the Borderlands 2 launch party extravaganza than to go back and listen to last year's panels. I'll eventually put up all of the panels for the games talked about over the course of that day (Aliens: Colonial Marines, Borderlands, Brothers In Arms: Furious 4, and Duke Nukem Forever) but for now enjoy the dark, scary, and xenomorph filled panel of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Now there is no rhyme or reason to which order they'll go up in, so you better check back in with the podcast feed to get updated. I have a feeling that the game that's getting the sequel and launch party will go up last.

Due to some legal reasons (at the time), I had to edit out the audio for the gameplay demonstrations (left the recorder running). Since it's been over a year and the demo shown off for Aliens: Colonial Marines has since been shown off publicly (you can head over to IGN to check it out if you want), I still don't know yet if it's okay to post that stuff. I'm also just lazy and don't want to go back into my archive and hunt down my original un-edited file, so you'll just get stuck with this one (just in case it's still not "okay" to have that gameplay audio and commentary).

We're about a month out from the second Gearbox Community Day on Sept. 15th, and what better way to get pumped up and excited for the panels and the Borderlands 2 launch party extravaganza than to go back and listen to last year's panels. I'll eventually put up all of the panels for the games talked about over the course of that day (Aliens: Colonial Marines, Borderlands, Brothers In Arms: Furious 4, and Duke Nukem Forever) but for now enjoy the entertaining panel of Brothers In Arms: Furious 4.

Games imitating art.....or something to that extent. Good times. Oh hey! We're back with another all-new, freshly wrapped Twisted Gamer Radio. We took the week off for 4th of July, and then decided one wasn't good enough, so we took another one (accidentally because of scheduling conflicts). But we're back, settled into our normal spots and ready to spit out all the stupidness and crap that go along with this podcast. Enjoy!
Due to a slight scheduling problem, we had to record the podcast a little bit late this week. We did get around to doing it, so strap in and get your ear-holes ready. Do we have a bombshell for you guys today. Dalyn and I discuss a myriad of issues going on with the gaming industry, how it's "not normal for a man in his 20's to play video games", and talk about skeeting and taking a dump on a chicks face just to get her to blink. Does this interest you? Then you need to listen to the brand new episode of Twisted Gamer Radio.
This is no doubt all of the fun we're missing at E3 2012 this year. Don't worry though, we'll have loads of impressions, insight, and details about the hottest releasing video games from the show next week. For now? Enjoy a cat mosh pit.
I regularly visit a forum where every other day or so, they'll post a thread named "LOL And You Lose". This is the picture that I lost to. Having seen the "original picture", aptly called "Lemon Party", I felt you needed to see it too. It has absolutely nothing to do with today's show, but I wanted to share this pic, and that's what you do with a blog right?
Yep. That guy is probably from Texas.

It's been a whirlwind of a week here in the Twisted Gamer household. I sold a car I've had for 10 years, I finally got all the money needed to make beer, and I'm ramping up for a big cookout for Memorial Day. On today's show, we get back into the heat of things and talk about digital prices being the same on launch day as a retail copy of the game, EA's got a scheme not unlike something we've seen before (*cough* Call of Duty Elite), and we touch briefly on E3 2012 coming up in a few weeks.
I never thought this day would happen. That one day I would do this. But alas, I went and did it.

I was one of the very few who held on for as long as I did, but sadly, it was time to say goodbye. And the amazing thing is, the story of how it came to be, is just as interesting as it came to go out. I bequeath my torch unto "66" and my good buddies Chris and Dave, as well as Paul from the MINI club. Everyone I know from the "original" group has either sold theirs or moved on to MINI 2.0 or 3.0.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a MINI. In my circle of friends (both through acquaintances, family friends, distant relatives, and new ones), I became the guy with the MINI. Every time I would see these people after a long hiatus, I was always asked, “Hey! Do you still have that little MINI Cooper?” And like clockwork and without missing a beat, I would always say, “Yep, still got him.”

I named my car Petey (after the dead bird from Dumb and Dumber who seeks revenge on the two dimwits and in my mind thought would go on a ghostly adventure to find them) - it was short for Pete – from The Adventures of Pete and Pete – a TV show so weird and off-the-wall, it just fit my personality. It served as an analogy of me – crazy, hair-brained, sometimes stupid, unpredictable, say anything, do anything type of guy.

My MINI changed styles over the years as I grew. One of my favorite stories is that I used to have these little South Park characters on my dash, and a South Park snow globe on my dash, as well as these stuffed characters from the show. Well, after my first “nightly encounter” with a lady, I came back out to my car and thought how retarded they were. Like I had done the movie cliché of “dude gets poonany for the first time and becomes a man” type of thing. But after that night? The stuffed characters and dash figures were out of my car.

I came into possession of my MINI in March of 2002 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. I won’t bore you with all of the details of that day (you can ask if you want to hear it in person), but a car dealership from Hot Springs was in Florida for a car show and saw these little Coopers from across the pond and figured they would be the new “thing” in the US. They bought three of them and shipped them back to Arkansas and even put out an ad in the Arkansas Times Gazette as having the only 3 in the entire state of Arkansas. I had been studying these cars for awhile now, and always loved the underdog nature of the MINI. The little engine that could rally. And rally well.

I ended up buying the base Cooper they brought in from Florida at age 20 (they had an S for $32,000 dollars and a CVT automatic for $28,000 to give you a price estimation around that time). I can remember fondly being a young kid on a jobsite in Hattiesburg, MS (just south of Memphis) when I got the call that I was the proud new owner of a new MINI Cooper. I remember going back to the Motel 6 where our crew was staying for the week and signing and faxing paperwork back and forth after work to finalize the deal.
After that, I proceeded to put on 128,000 hard miles on that car. I drifted on gravel/dirt roads, I took him off-road a few times, I went down roads cars weren’t supposed to, all in the spirit of exploring and finding adventures as a young 20-something year old kid.

There are certain moments along the way that I will never forget, that changed who I was as a person. I’m not going to sit here and say I was always a glowing child of positivity in my travels, I did make some mistakes, but I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to those people (even if they don’t read this) for what that stupid, idiotic, naïve little man did to hurt his friends at the time.

I’ll always remember my time at the Addison Flying Saucer. My plate will always be there. I know it’s filled with mostly gibberish, but it should say thank you to everyone who ever came up to the Saucer and had a beer with me. There are so many amazing memories there; it’s almost as if the Saucer is the glue to about 5 years of my life.

I’ll remember those long, dark, tree covered roads in rural Arkansas that I drove by myself at 2 o’clock in the morning. Those roads led me down new paths and let me soak in the cool night air.

I’ll remember of course Metroplex MINI (which reminds me I need to just go delete my account now), my home away from home. I’m proud to call a lot of people who I met there my very close friends. I would not be where I am right now if it wasn’t for the people of that club and of the club itself. I’ve burned a few bridges with people in my time, but looking back on where I was headed with alcohol and what I was doing to people with it, I needed to do what I did (which is break away from it).

In a separate category, I have to put in the Hill Country Rendezvous. And before you think back to the asshattery that went on in 2007, my most profound moment from that group down in Fredricksburg is the first time my brother and I ever went to the first one. We woke up at 4am to drive from Dallas down to Fredricksburg, then had to drive 30 minutes away that night to find a hotel room because we didn’t reserve a room in advance (didn’t think it was needed). Yeah, we were young. But two brothers driving MINI’s through livestock and over cow-guards; it was an incredible trip.

Then, came what happened at HCR 2007. Most of you reading this were there, so I don’t need to say too much about this. What happened on that trip, stayed on that trip (except for Brookman’s video tape, which gets a free pass). I had the opportunity to do some very bad things on this trip. Luckily I was straight-headed enough to not do them (which some would say I needed to drink more).

And finally, I will continue to remember my friends. This is a given. We will continue down this path called life, and our friendships will continue to grow bigger and bigger.

For a few of you out there, you probably are saying you “don’t get it” or “it’s just a car”? Well, it was a MINI, and MINI’s aren’t in the same category as Toyota Corollas or Priuses. They aren’t even on the same planet.

I think back over the amazing times that we shared Petey, as a young starry-eyed boy with a full tank of gas and an empty co-pilot seat could drive out into the world and find so much more.

As time wore on though, so did your problems. Ailments, issues, things that needed replacing; it all added up to be too much for me at one time. I guess I needed instant results. Too much money to buy this one thing that would fix a little part of you, but not enough to make the whole picture worth driving again. It was sad. It was like seeing that puppy grow up with so much vigor and pep in his step that towards the end of its life, you just hurt to see how miserable it is just sitting in the driveway begging to go out one last time. Sorry buddy. Not today. Maybe some other time.

Well, that time never came.

So with a heavy heart…….I finally had to sell my MINI Cooper Petey. It’s been 10 years since I got him.

10. Years.

I basically had a 10 year old kid.

Yes, you could say I abandoned a 10 year old kid and I’m a horrible imaginary father, but you would be retarded. I’m not.
I want to thank everyone who got to ride in my car, got to see it, and was part of the process that makes MINI, well, MINI. You were either there to support me on an idea, or you were there pushing me to sell it after it had run its course: Thank you guys.

I hope to adjust to MINI-less life soon. It still feels weird to go out to the garage and not see those little front headlamps glaring back at me.

As far as the money is concerned, I now plan on finishing Dove Meadow Brewing Company with the money, and pay off some much needed credit cards and maybe do a little home improvement. After that though, we’ll see what the next 10 years hold……
Every once in awhile something gets inside Dalyn's ass and he has to write lyrics for an Xbox Sucks Rap. We did it long ago, and we're up to Volume 3 now with his incredibly funny renditions. I even poke fun that with all of the gangsta rap that came out back in the day, they wrote from the heart, about their upbringing in the 'hood and rapping about the hardships they had to go through. Dalyn's hardships are having to put up with a "lackluster piece of shit system" called the Microsoft Xbox 360. Enjoy today's show kiddies. It's a doozie!

I love AAA title video games. Well, most of them. Some franchises today are considered AAA only because they made it to the second or third iteration in a franchise. By that time gamers have figured out the formula and it's just gotten to the point of being stale (I'm looking at you Killzone 3, Gears 3, and Uncharted 3). Being a AAA title doesn't immediately mean you'll have a great story (Killzone), great writing (Gears), or great gunplay (Uncharted) in your game.

Let me be clear though: I don't want my little gripes to get lost in the fact that these are still great fucking games, and well worth your money and time, even if they have little flaws.

One of the things about Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception that just bugged the living shit out of me was not a running quick-time event sequence, an unclear puzzle solution, or lackluster gun aiming. While most everyone under the sun you talk to who has played or even watched the games will praise Uncharted (and the franchise) as being a big budget Hollywood film in video game form, or fawn over it's use of dynamic cameras for a more cinematic action, I still can't get over that bullshit hand on the wall thing that Drake does as he moves around in Uncharted 3.

Naughty Dog has made their reputation now over the course of three games as bringing life-like characters, great stories, twists and turns into the video games medium. How could they glaze over this seemingly small detail that doesn't need to be there? Why not just cut it out of the game entirely? What purpose does it serve other than to annoy me?

Sure, you ask anyone who's played Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and they'll probably mention the horribly long and over-used "trip-out" session featuring Drake running through a foggy market yelling out "Get off of me!", "No! Nononononono!" in signature Nathan North fashion. Yeah, that's annoying, but that's story related to showcase how much Drake is tripping balls on that serum concoction given to him through blow-dart - it doesn't last the whole fucking game.

But there it is. Glaringly obvious as Drake runs around. Not in a climbing sequence, or one of those "tight fit" corridors you have to squeeze through; it just happens when Drake gets remotely close to a wall or column. He'll raise his arm up and gently touch the wall, column, or pillar as he moves by. Like he needs steadying?

After seeing the trip-out running level, I started to think that throughout the rest of the game Drake must have some lingering effects from that serum, or he's tripping bawls on ecstasy and needs to touch something every 20 seconds. Like he's there running around looking for his ancestors lost gold fortune enjoying all of the intricacies of the block work in castle ruins and loves the little fabric detail from the rug vendor in the Egyptian market as he passes. I JUST NEED TO TOUCH SOMETHING!

I understand the reasoning for putting it into the game - immersion. You begin to feel that the character - the polygons and pixels that make up Drake - is a living breathing person that moves, reacts and sounds like one. This idea would have worked if this whole wall touching wouldn't happen all the damn time and it wouldn't bend Drake's shoulders and arms back in weird obtuse angles. Hey Drake, do you really need to touch that piece of the wall 3ft behind you as you move? Is that piece really all that special than the next? Oh, you found a nice hole in that block for something else? Egyptian gloryhole maybe?

I know that developers are constantly looking for ways to engage and immerse video game players into the universe and connect them with their created characters. I get that. That's a good thing for the industry. But if this is the type of bullshit that developers feel is immersion in their games, give me some slider in the menu system that would allow me set the immersion just under this. I don't care if Drake has slightly clunkier animations; I would be perfectly happy with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune style animations.

I haven't quite finished Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, so I don't know for a fact that Drake doesn't get shoulder surgery in the next chapter to fix his wonky arms, or is put into a decompression chamber to come down off of the massive amounts of ecstasy he took. It all could work out in the end. In any case: Naughty Dog has made one hell of a series with Uncharted and Nathan Drake. I only hope The Last of Us (the next title Naughty Dog is working on) includes lots of wall touching. Who knows, maybe they'll include a wall touching mini-game?
Justin McCulloughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09861298462065449078noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8702164271082266354.post-54532395055865648992012-04-26T19:59:00.002-05:002012-04-26T19:59:20.341-05:00TGR Episode 1 - A New Venture For Distorted Gamer

I feel like I have to explain this episode title just a little bit. This was our very first podcast episode title for Loot Ninja, and it set the bar on everything that we would do after that. Over 60+ episodes later and I sit here typing a "new" podcast post for this blog - The Distorted Gamer. In a way it's a subtle tribute. A way to say thanks.

I will not count any of the episodes before this as part of TGR. We are starting fresh, starting new, and are re-branding ourselves and turning over a new stone. So with that comes a new format, a new episode style labeling system, but with the same old twisted-ness you've come to know and love. I would have named this episode "TGR Episode 1 - Dalyn Has Horrible Protein Farts", but I feel I should give credit where credit is due. Enjoy today's show everyone. Welcome back to your home of stupid.
Hello everyone. Glad you found us finally. This will be the last of the "feed dump" episodes that I do. "Feed dump". Man that term I made up just sounds funny. It's got a nice ring to it, but it also serves a purpose. We're getting all of the cobwebs swept away from the recording equipment, computers, servers, podcast feeds, and everything else needed to bring you the Twisted Gamer Radio podcast.

We're doing it our way this time, with no limitations or internal hurdles what-so-ever. We're not going to edit the podcast, we're not going to cut it down, we're going to give you the "whole hog" laid back views and opinions every week that we can.

All we ask is that you spread the word. If you like Twisted Gamer Radio, us, our style, anything; tell a friend or two. That's it. That's all you have to do. We appreciate you guys for sticking with us. Now it's time for you to let your friends in on the "clubhouse of stupid".

We don't ask much from all of our former Loot Ninja followers, Twitter people, Facebook friends, or anyone who just randomly stumbled across us from Google, but now is the time. Enjoy the podcast everyone, we'll be back next week for a brand new show.

On today's show:

- I have no idea. It's been so long since I listened to this. I thought we would be able to just put the show up on Youtube and give it to people that way, but it was a little bit more involved in getting the podcast up.
It's been a long ass time, and don't know if I'm truly ready to get back behind the mic.

Don't worry, it's much easier this time around. I've already got all of the equipment. I've got web-hosting duties locked up for pretty cheap. I just need to figure this whole RSS/Blogger integration/iTunes bullshit out. Here's hoping this all works.

I'll be running some tests over the coming days to make sure things are running smoothly. For now though, I'll start you off with one of my favorite episodes we ever did, just showcasing how stupid, retarded, and weird we are behind a few microphones.
Video games as an art-form are at an all-time high and with the next generation of consoles coming out in the near future I can only see the popularity rising. These are just a few ideas that I just came up with that I feel would make some pretty cool video games or DLC.

1. Zombie DLC for GTA IV or GTA V

The zombie pack for Red Dead Redemption (Undead Nightmare) was amazing, and is how you do zombified DLC. Just think of how Niko Bellic could ride through Liberty City and instead of pedestrians and street whores there are zombies everywhere.

I feel that just having zombies all over the place while you ride through the city would be fun enough, but then having a variety of missions where you have to save people that will help you get rid of all the zombies would put it over the top. I'm thinking something to the extent of overloading the nuclear reactors to destoy the entire map before the zombie horde spread to the entire planet sort of thing. Sounds awesome.

2. 1600's Salem Witch Trials

You're in 1600's America. You're a detective trying to figure out who is a witch and who is not. You're an investigator that ends up staying in a creepy town like Silent Hill that has a lot of weird things going on and everyone blames these supernatural occurrences on witches. You don't know who to trust and who not to trust. One of your companions could turn out to be a witch all along and you've given her half of your supplies to hang onto as well as your only gun.

Of course there's got to be bunch of spooky scenes as you walk through the woods in a dense fog trying to find the old ladies house made of moss just outside of the village. IT SOUNDS GOOD TO ME! Where can I sign up for the patent on this one... I like it!

3. Cabela's Big Hunter Hunt: 2013

We've seen handfuls of the tried and true hunting game, but we have yet to see the view from the animals' perspective. Just imagine the tension as you traipse your 4 hooves through the forest underbrush anticipating a shot from any angle. You dip your head down for a drink of water or see the luscious treat of some deer salt; a temptation that weakens your knees. Do you head for the deer salt and risk safety? What is that large grey spot up in a chair-like apparatus attached to a tree? Click over to deer vision. You don't have much time to assess the situation and get to safety.

This game would be awesome. That's all that need to be said. More to come soon!
Goofytallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15302618756409346481noreply@blogger.com0
